98% of the consumers in Sweden recognizes the Keyhole symbol. The Keyhole has been used since 1989 as a food label that identifies healthier food products within a product group. Choosing foods with the Keyhole symbol makes it easier and less time consuming to find healthier products in food stores. Foods labelled with the keyhole symbol contain less fat, sugars and salt and more dietary fibre than food products of the same type not carrying the symbol.
Restaurants have been able to use the Keyhole symbol to signify healthy menu choices since 1993. But the National Food Administration soon found out that restaurants need a certification process to increase the knowledge of healthy cooking and secure the quality of the healthy menues served. In 2007 the National Food Administration ran a succesful certification pilot-project. In 2009 an new organisation for the certification was formed.
